[Elecraft] KX3 to practice sending CW

Hello,

For a CW-sending practice session, I'm having trouble setting up the KX3 to decode my sending.
I know it can be done because I had it working a couple years ago by following the page 71-72 directions in the book by Fred KE7X (SK) for the KX3.
I'm using the same directions again now.

The mode is CW.
PTT was set.
I did have "RX THR3" showing.
The little "T" is in the lower-right corner.
I hear my sending.
But the VFO-B window shows the clock.
Having done the set-up several times with the same negative result, I need to ask for help.
