ARRL says it’s “an informal contest” and says that the “contest part” is to contact as many folks as possible, as well as what Bob notes.
Everybody is right, but this duality has more than once created a bit of tension between the picnickers and the contesters in my neck of the woods.
Whatever, it’s been the best testament to the front end of a K3 I‘be experienced.
