As a retired computer security guy, I run a mail agent which 
doesn't render HTML. I assume that HTML email is from marketing 
people who are more interested in bling than in information.

Also, while the HTML interpreters may have had most of their 
security bugs shaken out, they still allow tracking by the big 
tracking companies e.g. Google, Facebook, Twitter etc. When the 
mail agent fetches a piece of Javascript, the server can log 
your IP address and which piece of email issued the fetch, 
adding to the cache of information about you.
