Perhaps the incorrect wording is being assumed.

3D is 3 Dimensional to most folks.

2D in this particular case is probably better described as 2 Directional (as 
in fixing item 1 to item 2).

But they *do* allow you to join two enclosure planes while also supporting a 
PCB or other hardware. That was the intent of the design. (I invented these 
in 1998 :)
