Elecraft documentation suggests 24-28 feet of wire in the air and 16 feet on the ground for 40 m and up. Specifically, the ground wire is recommended to be at least 1/8 wavelength on the lowest band and preferably 1/4 wave. The recommendations in the KX2 manual say 1/4 wave.

For working down to 80 m, 53 feet seems to be a good choice for avoiding resonance on most bands.

That is in the documentation for the KX1 ATU and the KX2.
