As an avid caver (ham radio got me into caving 50 years ago ... another story) here are a couple of links to what hams have done underground. The big drawbacks are cost and hauling the gear. Currently a group is investigating using the family radios for digipeating. http://aprs.org/cave-link.html
... and in Arizona http://ke7hr.com/caveradio/80meterhfunderground.pdf

Thanks Bill,
Most of my caving was done in the Black Hills. Pringle Cave was
great fun. Twenty foot soda straws, boxwork, popcorn, and a variety of
helictites. Some caving in Wisconsin too.
