40 years ago, I found a foot pedal for an early IBM Dictaphone at a flea
market. It has a switch in it that allowed the stenographer to press either
side to go backwards or forward when typing the recorded dictation. I wired
both sides together so pressing either side completed the circuit. It is 4'
x 4", made of metal, heavy and has been in use for 40 years. Bob, K9ING

I use my old J-38 straight key wired to a RCA plug that goes into the PTT
jack on the rear of the K3. The advantage is that you don't have to pick it
up to use it or put it down to type. Easy to wire up too. Buy an audio
cable, lop off one connector, dress the leads out and connect them to the
key binding posts.
BTW, have you considered using VOX in the contest? Completely hands free.
