Ted,

Get a round body pushbutton switch, then look around for something to
contain it which feels comfortable in your hand - the cap from a Sharpie
marker or the body of a fat ballpoint pen come to mind. Drill a hole in
the far end if there is not sufficient opening to pass the wires, and
put whatever plug on it that fits your transceiver PTT jack.

If the pushbutton does not stay with friction, glue it in with E6000
cement, or epoxy or whatever works to keep it in place.

If you don't have such materials available, the cost is much smaller
than buying a commercial pushbutton PTT switch. The switch and 1/4 inch
plug can be found at Mouser - choose economy shipping unless you have
other parts to order.
