To all who responded to my question about distorted SSB audio with the KXPA100, thanks!

My antenna is a Hy-Gain AV620 elevated vertical, fed with 100 feet of Davis Buryflex (direct bury, feedline loss comparable to Belden 9213).  SWR is 1.5 or lower on 20 through 6 meters.

Don makes an interesting point about power supply voltage.  As I mentioned, it is 13.7 on receive and 13.1 with 100 watts output.  That is on 20 meters.  On 10 meters, it is 12.7 with 100 watts output.  By Don's figures, that is a possible problem.

I've got lots of receivers.  I tried listening to myself on a KWM-2, chosen because it's got vacuum tubes.  There is distortion at all power levels with the KXPA100, but no distortion with the barefoot KX3.  That argues against supply voltage being the sole cause, but there could be more than one.

I want to try one more thing: the Elecraft mike.  I've had RF problems with several other mikes and rigs, and I want to try a mike that I know is clean.  Unfortunately it has an 8-pin Yaesu cable, so I've ordered an adapter that plugs into the KX3.  When it comes, I'll post the results.

Since the K3 operates so differently (than traditional radios) for 
proper modulation I thought I'd ask this:
In olden days amplifiers were rated in PEP typically as 2x average 
(or CW) power, so for AM one had to set carrier at 1/4 full carrier 
output to stay linear. (1/2 carrier  for SSB).

But now I am setting up a 600w linear amp to run at P1 which is about 
0.9 of P3 (saturated power) and wondering what level of carrier power 
to run in SSB to stay linear and also not to overdrive and stress the 
expensive LDMOS device in the amplifier.

I'm running the K3 in transverter mode on 28-MHz so max output is 
1.5mw.  I can view this with a scope.  The amplifier is running at 
1296-MHz which is too high a freq to monitor with my scope.  I can 
only observe average RF power from a directional coupler and diode 
detector (like a Bird meter).

Normally, I just set power on the K3 to drive my amp to nominal full 
power and select SSB mode.  Modulation level is set by observing ALC 
meter.  I is ALC showing five bars when saying the word "five" loudly 
and six bars with compression.  So does this mean the K3 
automatically adjusts RF power in SSB to stay linear with proper 
modulation audio setting?

My reason is when running 1296 SSB to avoid overdriving the amplifier 
into P3 possibly causing harm, as much as not wanting to produce 
non-linear products.

Ed,

The power you request with the power knob is the PEP level that the K3 
will control.  That is regardless of mode.
The K3 compensates for the mode automatically.

The same should be true of the transverter output.

The KX3 with which I drive it operates normally on all bands and modes, with good transmit audio.  Speech compression is off and mic gain is set to 20. 

Should I send the amp back to Elecraft for service, or is there another problem?

Thanks, Don, as I suspected (kind of).

Of course in CW PEP=carrier power and makes 
sense.  I never really *asked* this question 
before as I always had nice reports on my 
SSB.  Gives me confidence running my new 
*expensive* LDMOS kilowatt amps on 144 and 1296 
plus my old-school 16 NLA transistor Harris on 
50-MHz when running SSB. Mostly run them "full 
bore" with either CW or digital on eme, where PEP 
is approx equal to carrier power.

The 144 and 1296 amps are new and not yet QRV 
(but soon).  I will sell my 2m W6PO-8877 with 
HVPS when this is accomplished.  Passing of an 
era to "no-tube" operation which started 60 years ago with a DX-35 (6146).

I spoke with Elecraft at the International DX Convention and it did not 
sound promising that a kit version would be produced.? A kit is not 
totally out of the question but due to burn in? and other issues the 
question is can a kit be marketed at a lower price point that an 
assembled amplifier.? At this point that does not seem possible.? If a 
kit is not less money what is the point unless you just want the 
building experience.

Ray,

Do you have a dummy load and another receiver?  Borrow the receiver if 
necessary.

You can't tell much by the KX3 monitor.
Connect the dummy load to the ANT jack and connect a short wire to the 
other receiver.  Place that wire far enough away from the dummy load to 
obtain about an S-9 signal.  Listen with headphones.

Transmit at several power levels.  How does the signal sound at each.
If it sounds OK on the dummy load, then look for RF in the shack to be 
the problem.
OTOH, if it sounds distorted into the dummy load, contact elecraft 
support - support at elecrat.com

I also had some distorted audio reports on my transmitted SSB signal 
when I first got my K3.? I finally narrowed it down to the fact that I 
had it connected to my computer (RS-232 for sure and I might have been 
feeding the receive audio into the computer sound card as well).?? I 
made a K3 chassis to computer chassis bonding strap using some RG-8 
braided shield.? I started out with the strap being about three feet 
long and kept shortening it until the distortion totally went away at 
about 12 inches long (verified using a second battery powered rig to 
listen to my own signal).

So the first thing I would do is make sure all of your gear adheres to 
proper bonding practice.

Ray,

Do you have a dummy load and another receiver?  If so, connect the dummy 
load to the KXPA100 and put a short antenna wire on the other receiver.
Transmit, and adjust the distance between the dummy load and the other 
receiver "antenna" to produce an S-9 signal.
Does the KXPA100 produce a distorted signal?
If not, then look carefully at your antenna system - the likely problem 
is RF-in-the-shack.

OTOH, if the KXPA100 output is distorted working into the dummy load, 
you should contact support at elecarft.com with those facts.

One thing that can cause some distortion is low power supply voltage to 
the KXPA100.  That voltage should be at least 13.8 volts during receive 
and drop to no less than 13.2 during transmit at 100 watts.  Low voltage 
during transmit can cause increase IMD (distortion).

Don Wilhelm's advice on this is "spot on" For the Elecraft
or any transceiver, get back to basics and do your testing..
Eliminate all connections to computers or other stuff.  Check
out the radio - then when all is well - add back the other things.

Would appreciate advice on the use of the* notch filter* on my KX3

It is fitted with* KX3FL3* roofing filters. I only use CW

Once I have spotted a weak signal I can  use these to narrow down and
filter out unwanted noise on the chosen signal

I can also apply the APF filter and tune that way.

Recent advice suggested that the APF function  works best when when used
with a  DSP/crystal filter WIDTH setting of 300-500 Hz

Does this mean I switch on the Notch and tune to this range on the notch
setting and how does this work with the bandwidth settings on the PBT
function?

Do I leave the notch on whilst tuning for other signals or only use it when
I have a weak signal in the first place.

Trial and error has left me doubtful whether I am getting the best out of
this function.

Any advice most welcome.

This reflector covers all Elecraft products.

The notch filter is only used to notch out an *unwanted* signal - use it 
carefully since you can easily notch out the signal that you are trying 
to receive.

First use the DSP filter to home in on the wanted signal - the PBT knob. 
  The roofing filter will follow along with the width of the DSP passband.

Once you get the wanted signal, you can optionally use APF if it is of 
benefit.

If there is an unwanted signal within the passband, you can use NOTCH to 
reduce it.

The green VFO A cursor seems very bright in comparison to my P3. I don't see
any way to adjust opacity but it would be nice to be able to do that. The

looks like black bar with green  lines. There is probably a quick fix for

There are enough to store data for each band segment in the 160m thru 6m 
bands.  Page 15 of the KAT500 manual shows the width of each band segments:
? Below 3 MHz the segments are 10 kHz wide.
? From 3 MHz through 26 MHz the segments are 20 kHz wide.
? From 26 MHz to 38 MHz the segments are 100 kHz wide.
? From 38 MHz to 60 MHz the segments are 200 kHz wide.

You are not likely to run out of memories.

The easiest way is to go to the Elecraft website and click on "eMail 
List" on the top banner.  From there you can click on the like to
