Mike,
DE-9 is the proper designation for what most call the DB-9 connector.
The proper "DB" designation is for the wide 25 pin size housing that was
used for printers on the PC and on commercial modems.
When the IBM PC first came out, they used 9 pin connectors for the
serial ports and many referred to them as DB-9 even though the proper
designation for that size connector (no matter how many pins) is "DE".
