My only point John is that replacing that diode with instructions for Elecraft is not at all difficult to do.

I am surprised that you think it is
not possible to accidentally set the
bandpass filter to the wrong band or have an automatic
 switching relay
fail, have a control wire pull out or just plain cockpit
 error after
operating sleep deprived?  W0MU has a good point, if
 you're operating away
from home like many of us do it could be a nice feature.

I replaced that diode in my K3 with instructions from an
 Elecraft
technican-person. I also at the point purchased bandpass
 filters so that I
didn't have to worry about that happening again.
