I will have been a ham for 50 years next year, and I believe I can say
with some authority that the average operator of today is no worse than
the ones I came across back then. Our hobby is not free of whackos any
more than general society is, and if anything we had to suffer more of
them 50 years ago when ham radio was actually a somewhat mainstream
communication medium.
I don't think ham radio has changed as much as you might have.
