42 feet is 5/8 wavelength on 20 meters. That is the longest vertical one can use before the radiation angle starts to rise above the horizon. Since operation on the lower bands (esp. 80 meters) wants the longest possible radiator, 42 feet is an excellent compromise for 80-20 operation (with proper matching of course). 73 Ron AC7AC
