Try the original KXUSB cable again.

On my Win 8.1 computer, sometimes serial communications stops for no 
apparent reason. The LEDs inside the dongle stop flashing. If I 
unplug/replug the dongle from the USB jack on the computer's rear panel, 
it starts working again.
