for shelving , spend a bit more for this one time event...
use multi-ply  'baltic birch" plywood,,,7 or 9 ply...

they have it at  home depot /lowes type stores, but a visit to the 
rockler woodworking store was great,
as they had some 9 ply on sale .,..
