Hoop,

I do not have that Fred Cady book, but I would think that is intended 
only to switch between the K3 and the KX3 when both the K3 and KX3 are 
powered on.

If you want to operate the KX3 with the K3 powered off, you can remove 
the cable from the K3 ACC connector.
