Not quite true. The EI232 spec as it is now called does indeed define the connector and pinouts in addition to signals and levels.
There are definitions included for DB-25, DE-9, RJ-45 and maybe a few others. Few vendors meet the entire spec, usually
leaving out a few handshake signals. But, this still allows them to claim spec compliance as long as the signal levels meet
the spec requirements.
RJ-45 serial ports have been shipped by a large number of vendors, including Sun Microsystems, HP and others.
