The one downside I’ve found so far is that virtually all of them specify “not for use in enclosed luminaries”.  

This means that if you have enclosed glass luminaries (like overhead fan lights, and many outdoor lamp enclosures, for example), you have to replace the luminary too.  I presume that’s because of the high heat generated in the base of the LED lamp.  Although, to be honest, a standard bulb gets pretty hot in those things, too.
