[Elecraft] FW: K5AND's KX3 upgrade problems

Folks....

The following suggestions by Dick Dievendorff, with help from Jack Brindle
got me back on the air.
My KX3 was particularly 'stubborn' about swallowing a lot of code in one
gulp, so Dick came up with this excellent work around.

Special thanks to the special people at Elecraft who spend countless hours
keeping our stuff working!

I would suggest these steps:

1) Enable KX3 Utility "Advanced" Mode, a View Menu option. This causes a
couple of check boxes to appear on the Firmware page, "Load MCU" and "Load
DSP".
2) If he's already loaded the MCU once and it gets as far as initialization,
it may have been loaded correctly, but it is trying to initialize with a
back-level DSP that needs to be loaded before the MCU can correctly start
up. I would turn on the radio, press DISP enough times to get rid of the ERR
messages, then click "Load DSP" (and not Load MCU on the KX3 Utility), and
"Send Checked Items".

When DSP load completes, hopefully the MCU will respond correctly after the
DSP is up to level. If Dick's MCU is still back level, it should load this
time without incident. He can uncheck the View Menu option and "Send New
Firmware" to load just the MCU, or use Advance Mode and check (just) Load
MCU and click "send checked items"

I would also make sure you have the most recent KX3 Utility, as some of the
time delays for various firmware load events has been adjusted to deal with
the requirements of recent firmware versions.

Guys;

I am trying to help Dick Hanson, K5AND, with his KX3 woes. Dick tried to
upgrade his KX3 to the latest firmware, only to have things fail. I sent him
older versions, but no joy.
Now he needs someone how actually knows something about the KX3. He is
trying to upgrade to V1.87 using the 113824 KX3 Utility. I also sent him
V1.68 which also fails.

Info that is pertinent:

Here's the utility message:
KX3 mcu revision 01.87. RS-232 speed 38400 bps Error code 0xE2000045: no
response after reset MCU verification failed. Reload MCU.

In addition to the above message, the KX3 is displaying d = 098; ERR DSE.
When I turn it off and then back on again, it displays d = 013; ERR RFB.

Thanks!

Jack B
