I'm not sure what you're asking, but here's what I do. I assign two menu
functions to the soft keys -- the Fixed Track on/ff toggle, and the
Peak/Average toggle. I use the remaining buttons for the range of span
settings that I most often use - 2 kHz, 10 kHz, 20 kHz, 50 kHz, 100 kHz,
and 200 kHz.
I use averaging nearly all the time, with long averaging times. I use a
scale of 24 dB for day to day operating, 42 dB for contesting, and as
low as 18 dB for weak signal operation on VHF. I carefully set the base
of the display so that it's just above the noise level.This makes empty
space black or near black, so that weak signals are most visible in the
waterfall.
There are separate averaging settings for the spectrum display and for
the waterfall. I use the longest settings for all of them.
