Dick, I had the same problem when I migrated to Mint 16. When you attempt to run
the utility from a terminal window you should see a few lines of text appear
when the utility is run. In my case the ftdi drivers for the usb adapter were
missing. They may be in the Ubuntu repository or failing that google for 'Linux
ftdi driver'. they are freely available on the net.
