Good Evening,
The other shoe of winter has fallen. After some snow and cold in
November this year's rainy season has been mild; up until a week ago
that is. The temperature has dropped back into the teens and lower and
the snow has been piling up. The snow is unusual for Oregon. It is
dry, so dry you can sweep it. Even after three days of snowfall it is
still dry and light. But never fear because starting some time tonight
all the precipitation will be of the warmer types like freezing rain,
hail, rain, and wet, heavy snow. We did need the moisture so hopefully
the snow will not melt in a day.
I have been watching how the auroral oval varies over time. It has
been effecting a sked I have into Alaska. Propagation is rarely
reciprocal when we chat but when the auroral oval is over southern AK
it is worst. Then I can hear him at my normal S3 to S9 but all he can
hear is my call and a 73, nowhere near good enough to even exchange
signal reports. Non-reciprocal propagation is also common for me when
I work near the line of darkness; either on my end or on the other op's
end. When our signals bounce off the ionosphere they don't
consistently follow Snell's law of reflection :)
Please join us tomorrow.

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS
