[Elecraft] [KX3] Re: Relative Signal Strength

Ron is spot on with his observations about "S-Meters". Why does it
matter? Other than for comparative purposes, does anyone actually look at
one? There are more useful paramaters that panel / display space could be
used for.

I never look at the S meter.

It was many years before I had a radio that had a "product detector" and
not just a simple BFO, so there was no S meter to use when on CW. And it
was also many years before I even had a RX that had any kind of S meter.

And when I did get my hands on a good RX, I had to set the AF gain up and
controlled to volume with the RF gain. When you turned the RF gain down,
the S meter went to full scale. :-)

To me the only important parts of the RST are the R and T. The S, to me,
is only interesting if I'm switching between antennas to see what
difference there might be.

Maybe old habits die hard?

And to top it off, there is always the issue of S meter calibration..... or
lack thereof. :-)

OK, back in my hole,

Yeah, on 40, where the noise never falls below S5 (after 2 years chipping
away at power line and neighbor noise), I still run with the pre-amp on at
20dB and knock back on the RF Gain to whatever level works. All in the name
of a consistent S-meter reading. Works like a champ.
