[Elecraft] hooking up a K3 to a Alpha 76

How about setting it to VOX.  There is a note in the manual about this.
Relay key line will go active, but no power out of the K3 and, therefore, no
power out of the Alpha.

This happens on my K3/Al-80B combo.

I believe so. K3 works great by it's self. Going to try everything again
today since i've had a good nights sleep.
