Me too, but I'm a bit too late to answer!

Anyway there are other settings that 'sound strange' to me:

The only thing that 'sounds normal' is that, with SPKR ON, at high volume,
the VOX do its job and switch to Tx!
Tony, try to set SPKR+PH => no, AF low, and you will stay Rx until you
speak.
About the strange sounds... you have already solved the problem!
