[Elecraft] HC5 element change

Joe is right. The Radio Shack electret element is flat from about 100 Hz to
15 kHz. That leaves any audio shaping to be done in your hands at the rig.
I've used them in various communications mics for years with excellent
results: sensitive as specified and reliable.

At one time microphone manufacturing was like watchmaking or grinding
optics. The manufacturer and the skill of the workers had a significant
impact on the finished product. But, like making watches and lenses,
microphone elements have become a commodity produced with amazing precision
by computer controlled equipment at almost no cost.

Why spend $25 for the W2ENY element when you can do the same thing for $3 -
$4 at your nearest Radio Shack? See:

*Any* electret element is going to be a "high fidelity" element using the
W2ENY definition. None have any inherent frequency shaping ...
The W2ENY instructions for butchering (er, "upgrading") the D-104 are
on-line

and can be applied to almost any dynamic to electret conversion.
