The ref lock and TCXO options are not needed for normal work.  I do have them
both since I use mine to drive microwave transverters and I also run digital
modes where it is desirable to have the smallest drift and absolute
frequency predictability.  At 2M for FM and casual CW/SSB work I doubt you
need the options.

Filters: FM covers AM.   Be sure to assign the filters to each mode.

The accessory connector has a few digital control outputs you can leverage.
The manual explains the various ways to configure them, it is quite
flexible.

The FT-847 was a good VHF radio for me as long as you are not exposed to
nearby strong local stations.  For contesting on a mountain top as a rover
it was hurting bad, even with an Inrad filter added.  However if you want to
operate satellite, it is really easy to do with the 2M/70cm cross banding
capability.
