[Elecraft] [K3] receive on ssb--DSP problem?

Hi all,
I think I am going crazy -- vacation starts Saturday and I will have time to play with my K3 and now it is taunting me!
I know there have been discussions on loss of receive on SSB, and now something like that is happening to me, but different!
I was making some contacts on PSK and went back to CW and SSB to see who was on. I tuned in a SSB signal that I could see on the P3 screen but the receiver was completely silent. I switched the mode down to CW and I could hear sounds.
I figured the software might have gotten corrupted so I reloaded everything--no change. I have the 2.7, 2.1, 700 and 400 filters--checked with the K3 software and all are activated as given.
"Playing around" here is what I observed:
-If the DSP is opened to 3.20 the SSB sound comes through normally.
-If a narrower DSP setting is chosen (i.e. 3.0), the sound level drops way down, and at narrower settings (2.7 to 2.1) it goes away (no even background noise or hiss), but if I open CONFIG to CW QRQ and turn it from "off" to "on" to "off" again the sound will come through normally. If I even touch the Width control at this time the sound drops way down again until I open the DSP to 3.2 again, but this time the sounds are coming thru a "tube". If I switch to a different band and back again, sound is restored normally at DSP 3.2.
-it is the same with LSB and USB.
-the S-meter is active when the sound is reduced.
-Everything "appears" normal except there is very weak sound on SSB!
-things such as VOX, AGC, etc., do not seem to affect it.
CW seems to be working normally. I had been trying to get the APF to work, and now it does (I didn't understand how to turn it on!), but since the above started I went back and checked it to make sure I had not messed something up. Having Dual PD or APF set does not affect the SSB situation.
Ok, I put a lot of background so maybe it would help make it clear what is happening. If anyone can give me suggestions or criticize what I might be doing--please, all comments are welcome. I just want to get things "right" again!
Thanks and 73,
