MANY THANKS to Mike Heitmann, N0SO, for so kindly contacting me to say
perhaps the levels were set too high and forcing the KX3 to go into a
self-protect mode.  THAT WAS IT!  By reducing the sound card level and the
K3 level, I now have 4 ALC bars.  Hot diggity dog!

MANY thanks to each of the other kind folks who sent suggestions, including
Don Wilhelm, Brian Alsop, and Ray Sills.

As the saying goes, now we're cooking with gas!
