The keyer functions are embedded in the main microcontroller, there is no
separate keyer chip.
For the KX3, you can program the CW memories or send RTTY or PSK31 in a
couple of the data modes (DATA-D and FSK-D) with a paddle. You can't use a
straight key for these functions.
Either an iambic or single lever paddle can be used.
You can also use the KX3 Utility for these functions. Some of us (including
me) prefer to enter CW memories with a text edit-like function and a PC
rather than send them with a paddle.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft keyer chip
I suspect that Elecraft makes their keyer chips work as much the same or
similar as each other, but I am mostly concerned with the KX1 and also the
KX3 keyer chip:
1)
Are there any functions of the chip that are controlled by and necessitate
the use of a paddle?
2)
If there are, do any of these require that I have acess to a dual (iambic)
paddle (to engage both dit and dah at the same time), or are all
paddle-controllable functions just as accessible with a mono paddle as well?
