[Elecraft] K3 Subreceiver AF Gain and PR6-10 connection
Dauer, Edward
edauer at law.du.edu
Sun Aug 18 12:42:19 EDT 2013
Just finished the K3 and have it on the air. Neat! Much to learn yet. Two questions at this point, and a request for advice from the group . . .
First question: The AF gain for the subreceiver is markedly lower than that for the RF board receiver. Anyone know what I might not have configured correctly? The config AF gain setting doesn't change it - sub still much lower than main. (The sub is on the shared antenna and the RF sensitivity seems the same.)
Second question: the K3-to-KPA cable takes up the same 15-pin port as the PR6-10 is supposed to use (and a second cable from KPA to KAT uses up everything else.) Any options for connecting the preamp other than doing surgery on the cable?
Many tnx for any advice anyone can offer . . .
Edward Dauer, KN1CBR

The transistors arrived yesterday and I did ALL Don advised.
Everything checked out and I replaced the transistors with amazing ease.
All the diodes appeared healthy and the voltage was spot on.
Start to finish and being very careful, it took about 4 hours.
I'm getting 100 watts out and all is well in Zion.
I'm still getting a "High Current" warning occasionally at the first bit of
transmission.
Is this common/normal and should I check something else?
Interestingly this is serial number #7230 but from what Don was saying it
appears to have an older amp on it. I still haven't built a KPA100 so I'm
not very familiar with them but it does have a shield on it as Don
described.
How important is that fix?
Elecraft has once again endeared themselves to me.
I have very little electronics back ground. To be able to open a rig and
fix
it is really cool. This would have been unthinkable without the help of
this group.
I want to give a special THANKS to Don W3FPR, Dale WC7S and Dick K2ZR.

Stan,
First check the menu CAL CUR setting. It should be set at 3.50 - if it
is lower, that would explain the HiCur messages.
Check your power supply voltage. It should be 13.8 volts or higher (up
to 14.5 volts). The K2 tries to maintain the requested power output,
and if the voltage is low, it will draw more current to produce the
requested power.
If CAL CUR is OK, then try to determine if it occurs only on certain
bands - do not set the power control fully clockwise for one thing, keep
it at 100 watts (or below) - do you still get the HiCur messages? - if
not, all is well.
It is not unusual to get an occasional HiCur warning on 160 or 80 meters
when the power knob is fully clockwise.
If you get HiCur messages on all bands, take a look at transformer T4.
It should have 3 turns of white wire on the secondary winding. If it has
only 2 turns, someone built it for "better efficiency at 5 watts", which
should only be used with a K2 that will only be used on CW at power
levels less than 5 watts. It should not be used if either the KSB2 or
the KPA100 options are installed.
If you get HiCur warnings only on selected bands (40m, 20m, 15m, and
10m), check the number of turns on the toroids of the Low Pass Filter in
the base K2 - builders sometimes put an extra turn on the cores which
will cause that problem. If the bands are 30m, 17m and 10 meters, the
toroid turns on the KPA100 LPF may have an extra turn.
If the KPA100 has two red core toroids near the center of the board, it
is the older design. The new one has blue core toroids at RFC1 and L16
locations.
So that is as much as I can tell you with the information I have.

Don W3FPR

Hi all,
The KAT500 in my remote "hut" has got a little more company:
http://ab2tc.com/img_0179.jpg
http://ab2tc.com/img_0181.jpg
The gray box contains relays for 4 more antennas. It is controlled using the
2nd serial port on the Lantronix serial server (which is now almost
invisible in the picture). I also found room for a dummy load. In the fall,
when the leaves are gone, I plan to hang a delta loop for 20m to occupy that
last port (of course I can evict the dummy load if I find space for yet
another antenna).
NOTE: The pictures are much reduced in size now (about 100kB) so should be
friendlier to download.

When tapping the ON button to power off the KPA500, the unit still
remains in ON state unless the rocker switch on the rear panel is used.
The box is still warm (very little), a quiet 50 Hz hum is barely
audible. Can be the KPA left in this state or must I use the bottom
rocker switch to power off? What is the power consumption in this state?

Has anybody measured TX delay in KX3?
I tried to use it with 2 QSK amps, and KX3 seems to hot switch. Not a
problem with K3 default.

I am using PR6 with my K3 and power for it is supplied via the RCA 12 VDC out on the back of the K3.
Where may I supply the P3 power from the K3? Do I need another power supply for the P3?
Thanks

Power the P3 from the same supply the K3 is powered from.

You could build a relay box, fed from the Aux out and feed the PR6 & the P3 from that, the power for the relay box would need to come from the same PSU that is powering the K3 or a different PSU - but turning the K3 on would power up the other units

I'm getting K3 PL1 Error and no transmitter output.
After cooling a bit, PL1 voltage measures 5.9 volts. I get intermittent
output when I send a string of dits with PL1 voltage showing 5.9 volts when
a dit gets transmitted and 0.0 volts when a dit doesn't get transmitted.
Help please. Any suggestions?

I have been relearning to send CW again. I am using a Bencher/Elecraft Hex
Key Serial # E067.
It is a typical bencher key with a weight of 3 lbs 2 ounces. I guess I am
heavy handed and have been slapping that thing around the desk like a red
headed step child. lol.
I went and looked for a heavy key and about fell off the chair to find that
the Bencher Hex is now selling for $325.
Does anyone know how many of the Bencher/Elecraft keys were made?
I did find a heavy key, I ordered the K8RA Big Dog P5 key at 7 lbs. I hope
it stays put.
Any suggestions about tips to help me send lighter and or the number of
Elecraft hex keys made I would appreciated it.
Thanks

I have spoken with him several times.
I got my Bravo 7KR very fast. I am going to order his 40/80 vertical dipole
when it is ready.
I know he was backed up for a while, but have had no problem contacting him
directly by e-mail.
PS - Great performing antennas too.

You don't need a heavier paddle. Just museum wax on each foot. Press into position. Your paddle will stay put and not leave any marks if you decide to pry it up.

First, the desk surface must remain free of any waxes or dirt/dust, and the feet
must be clean and "sticky". If that doesn't work, do what I do.
I use hot glue. It works great and can be removed if you decide to move the key
to a different position. I would not recommend locking it down until you've
been back on CW for awhile, as your positioning preference may change,
especially if you progress in speed. I've glued down both my paddle and my old
Speed-X hand key on the desk, and they work fine.

If its moving around, I might drill holes in a board that match the feet of
the key and set it down on into the holes. Bolt, glue, clamp the board down
to your table as you see fit.

This and related products solve all my paddle jitter problems. Much
stickier than the rubber shelving liners I'd used in the past.

Good Evening,
Propagation was rather good this week with the normal summer QRN
and some QSB. Weather was pleasant, if cool. Our normal dry season had
a few very light showers. Luckily the fog the stormy weather brings
provides enough moisture to keep the forests from burning. Fall is
coming. The trees' new growth of spring has changed into old growth and
the foxgloves are all but done blooming.
Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Good steer, Rick. Same thing I use on the dash. Just begin with clean surfaces
and don't move it around. Cheap at WalMart, but they switched vendors and I
don't think the new ones are quite as good. I'm holding an IC7000 on my desk
with one right now. Never moves (inverted mobile mounting bracket on top of
non-slip pad on desk).

I switch between keys frequently using a variety of straight keys, bugs,
cooties and paddles, sometimes during a QSO. It would be a royal pain to
have any kind of permanent mounting. I have a couple of pieces of
leather I got from a Tandy store years ago. Michael's also has nice
pieces about 3x6" for a buck or two. Just lay the leather down on your
desk and lay the key on top of it. It gives the key an elegant look, and
the key stays put for either hand. The method is untested for left or
right foot.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to reconsider technique including backing off
the tension a little, and try to lighten up a bit. It shouldn't take
brute force to hold a key in place.
