[Elecraft] Battery news

I wouldn't be surprised if the article was legitimate. It basically
refers to a method of increasing the internal density of a lithium-ion
cell via a microscopic 3-dimensional structure. There's nothing
theoretically outlandish about that ... it's just difficult to do in
practice. Capacitors already use the same principle and nobody thinks
of them as an April Fool joke.

I do worry about one aspect of this sort of thing, though. Packing lots
of energy in a small volume with low enough resistance to access it very
quickly is already a concern with normal lithium-ion batteries. When I
worked in the semiconductor industry one of our key products was a FET
used as a current limiter so that Li-I cells wouldn't "rapidly
disassemble". The recent laptop fires and Dreamliner problems
illustrate some of the jeopardy. Putting the equivalent of a car
battery in a pacemaker or hearing aid battery would give me pause ...
