B&W has marketed a broadband folded dipole antenna that has a resistor 
terminating the top wire for decades.  They are indeed "broadband" and 
they must have sold a gazillion to the military because you regularly 
see them over National Guard and Reserve armories. They're great for the 
military who generally are not chasing DX or weak signals.  Hams ... not 
so much.  To their credit, the resistor has never been a secret.
