[Elecraft] K3 won't PTT in data...

I have an ongoing, long standing problem with using VOX to key the K3 in Data mode.

My sound card is a Creative USB dongle. I use a CM500 headset/mic, plugged into the 
back panel. If I get the mix of volume, line in level and VOX gain high enough to 
reliably key the rig, the smallest noise in the room gets to the mic and keys the rig.

Am I missing something?
