[Elecraft] K2: Remoting KPA100 and KAT100 - how many KIO2 needed?

Andrew,

The KPA100 contains the same function as the KIO2 on its circuit board.  
The RS-232 part will not function when the KPA100 is mounted remotely.
However, you have to provide a path for the internal K2 signals to 
communicate with the external equipment - IMPORTANT - those are NOT 
RS-232 signals, and applying RS-232 levels to them can damage the K2 (or 
KPA100 or KAT100).

So the answer is that you must have the KIO2 or a suitable substitute in 
the K2.
