The W3FPR modification is certainly a better mod technically. It is
necessary with passive interfaces and low sensitivity sound cards. The
current microHAM interfaces include a preamplifier for their internal
sound cards that provide sufficient sensitivity for the low level at
J5 in the K2.
Were it me, I would consider the W3FPR amp mod (or other buffer amp)
in order to assure that any problem external to the K2 (e.g., shorted
or improperly connected cable) did not cause loss of performance.
The microHAM connection provides an easy way to get going quickly with
minimum parts/soldering.
