[Elecraft] No Response From Elecraft

When putting together my kit, some screws were missing. I immediately
called Elecraft support and they answered the phone. However they told me
that they were in the process of taking inventory so they couldn't send out
the screws until a few days later. But they did, right after we hung up
they sent it out because on the day they said they would mail it out, it
arrived in my mailbox. Call them again and keep trying.

others as well. A great field test for the gear, and a great way to
make ops all over the world aware of Elecraft radios. And of course,
great gear with which to actually operate a DXpedition.

I was operating last night on the K3 and while transmitting phone on 40m
using my butternut HF6V the display on the K3 flickered and showed ALC on
the LCD when it wasn't actually selected for displaying. It happened
everytime I transmitted.
I switched to 20m and my hex beam for a quick check and there was no flicker
or any issue and also checked on 6m with my M2 and all was good. I am
wondering if this could be a RFI issue with the hF6V or could there be
something amiss with the K3 on 40m.
My audio reports with the butternut are fine. Just wanted to see if there
have been anyone who has experienced this same set of symptoms.

Yes, and more DXPeditions would be using K3s if the JA companies didn't
have deeper pockets than Elecraft. Think about the cost of doing that
for a small company the size of Elecraft, and you realize that it isn't
easy. For one trip that I was aware of the details, Eric could provide
two radios, but Icom gave them a half dozen 7600s and even paid
shipping, but demanded exclusivity.. On later trips that same group made
the decision for K3s, and I don't think they were supported by Elecraft!

I haven't seen the KXMM3 mobile mount bracket listed on the order page
yet. I have called RAM Mounts (GPS City handling their West Coast
inquiries). Looking at the drawing of the KX3 bracket one of their people
wanted me to use a RAM connector terminating with a ball mount to fasten to
the KX3 mount. That seems like it would need a wedge to fasten to it not a
ball.
I need to get the KX3 mounting compatibility squared away so I can do HF
tricycle mobile, before buying a KX3. Anyone who has seen my trike mobile
videos knows that I use a RAM Mount on a gooseneck to hold the control head
of my FT-857D. I want to do this with the KX3.
I am not in a hurry about the amp as I figure whenever the amp comes out, I
can always run wires along the tricycle frame to a bike trunk that holds
the amp and battery. At least I hope I can.

Sounds like RF in the shack, Keith. Put lots of radials on the
vertical and a common-mode choke on the coax where it comes into the
shack.

Yes, it's the PA kicking in; here's a small study I did earlier this year:

Other than the bump at the PA transition, the power increase per output watt
seems pretty linear.
The interesting implications come when running from an energy-limited
source like batteries: how much power cost (operating time penalty)
do you want to pay per dB increase in signal?

elevated with resonant radials and good grounding but probably need a better
common mode choke on it.

VP6T and TN2T set the standard when it comes to handling logs and
confirmations. Unlike HK0NA who appear to have lost significant
sections of their logs, VP6T had *confirmations* on Logbook of the
World daily along with ClubLog updates and TN2T had their logs on
LotW seemingly before getting home.

That one set the stage for all the succeeding K3 DXpeds that have built upon
the success of VP6DX.
And HK0NA will NOT be the last. More K3 DXpeds are in the works.
How time flies. It is difficult to believe that 4 years ago today (the
Tuesday after the Super Bowl) the VP6DX team was flying from Papeete, Tahiti
to Magareva in the Gambier Islands to rendezvous with the Braveheart.

Ah yes, sad but true, Joe. I forgot about that because it didn't
happen to hit me. Judging from their posts, they may be able to
recover the missing sections. This is purely a guess but they did
retrieve some of the lost QSOs while still on the island. Luckily,
they were so loud for so long that everyone had many chances to snag
them on any given band/mode, and re-work them if necessary.
The VP6T logs were great. The best was a Liberian expedition last year
that had real-time logging; your call was in the on-line log before
the last dit had died away.

It is a bummer that with my work and travel schedule they lost one of my
five contacts with them but oh well life goes on. Maybe I will get lucky and
they will recover them.
Funny about TN2T because about two hours after I paid for the QSL card
handling I received the LOTW confirms. Now I will be doubly confirmed for
the Congo.

This is a follow-up to my post of yesterday, about the excessive current
drain on my K3 in Transmit. Here is my original post:
I was playing around with my K3 and MFJ 4225 switching power supply, when I
noticed a strange thing. As you increase the power output, the input current
rises very quickly. Example:
in Receive mode, the K3 was drawing 2 amps.
In Transmit mode, CW, SK key down, at 1 watt out, it was drawing 4 amps
5 watts out, it was drawing 5 amps
8 watts out, it was drawing >6 amps
15 watts out, it jumped to 15 amps
30 watts out, it jumped to 20 amps
Didn't want to increase the power anymore, but, this seems excessive to me,
anyone else ever notice this?
Would appreciate any comments on this matter,

Thanks to the many who pointed out that the K3 draws a high current even at
low power once you get above the 12 watt level, due to the bias for the
power amp. I never considered this, and so when I made up a power cable to
operate indoors with my MFJ 4225 switching power supply, I used a single
light weight lamp cord at six feet long and a cigar lighter plug for the
power cord. My reasoning being I would only operate low power, not more than
30-35 watts indoors with my antenna right over my head. So, either the lamp
cord was too light, or the cigar lighter plug had too much drop for the
current being drawn, and so the current meter in the K3 was indicating 20
amps being drawn at only 30 watts output.
Once I fixed the power cord by using two #18 ga. lamp cords in parallel to
spade lugs rather than the cigar lighter plug, the K3 now draws 11.73 amps @
12.7 volts, with 35 watts output, from the MFJ 4225 power supply, which
seems more normal than the previous 20 amps at the same power out setting.
I hope my experience saves someone else some grief.

Well, I did some experimenting this morning.? On RTTY I can use PTT to
key the rig and it works in a snappier way than using vox for afsk rtty.? On
voice, though,
I key the rig with ptt from my laptop but no audio.? I tried setting the
menu entry to mic+line
but it tells me NOT APPL.? Not sure what to make of that.? Anyone else tried
this?

Not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but MAIN:MIC+LIN is only
applicable if MAIN:MIC is "FP.<blah>" or "rP.<blah>" - not if it's
"LInE In".

You can tell that your K3's handle has the Elecraft Mojo Core if it has a
slight curve in it, due to being hand-carried through airports and ports to
some exotic DX QTH, where the Core gets downloaded over the air from other
Elecrafties in the pileups, using the Elecraft Mojo Transfer Protocol
(EMTP).
Even if you only operate at home, provided you work enough exotic DX with
your Elecraft gear, the Core will eventually accumulate in the handle from
all the pileups and DX QSOs and gradually a gentle curve will set in. If
your K3 has a flat handle, you are evidently not working enough DX. Taking
the rig to somewhere such as Wake Island or Peter I will speed up the mojo
transfer and the curvature process dramatically.

Setting my P3 to the left of the K3 caused the K3 Handle to expand to the
point
of pushing the P3 1/2" from where it was originally on the OP.
Investigation of my logs indicates that the phenomenon may have been caused
by
the daily rate of increased DX contacts in the log since acquiring the P3.
Does that mean my K3, P3 and KPA500 all have Mojo?

It's unusual for it to take more than half a day for us to get back to
a customer on a service issue. But it can happen sometimes if we're
short-handed or have a higher work load. Today most of the technical/
support staff is at a long lunch meeting, but I've already contacted
them by cell phone, and this customer's issues will be dealt with when
they return.
I can understand how he feels. I've had my share of things go wrong
with new products, and it's no fun being on either side of the
equation. Fortunately it's rare in our case.

I was amazed to see the number of employee are under 50! wow....or so and
product quality and reponse time?looks like is over 1000 employee :-)
Actually this was one of the reasons to go?for K3 and I can say after 2
months? spent with the?small giant?I am impressed, overall?K3?side by side
with my FT5K functionwise is at least one step over.

I finally got it working, but I went through so many permutations that I'm
not sure where I'm at right now.
I'm letting it sit overnight and will check it again tomorrow.? If it still
works right, I'll writer down all the settings for my notebook.
The idea is to have N1 MM do most of the canned messages-CQ, TU etc.? But I
will have to voice the exchange as it is RST plus serial number and I don't
want to mess with number files to express a serial number.? It's easier just
to speak that one.

Not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but MAIN:MIC+LIN is only
applicable if MAIN:MIC is "FP.<blah>" or "rP.<blah>" - not if it's
"LInE In".

I have asked Elecraft several time about giving the option of a second
antenna port without having to buy an antenna tuner but so far nothing. I
have had a FT1000MP for over 15 years and never used the internal tuner so
don?t see me needing one in the K3. The hole is already there for the
connector so just need a mod on the ANT Relay board. I know I could put an
outboard switch on the outside but I would like to put 6 M on one of the
ports and with the outboard switch that make 2 extra connectors in the line.
Having the antenna switch inside the radio is a lot more elegant and
efficient. Having to pay for the antenna tuner just to get a second port
goes against my miserly grain. Having the 2 ports without having to buy the
antenna tuner would be a nice selling point for Elecraft I would think.
Wonder if anyone has ever tried to install the second antenna port by
mod?ing the antenna relay board? I have my asbestos suit on. 73 Mike K4PI

There are two Hamfests on March 17th where we have been asked to have an
Elecraft table.
As we cannot attend these personally, we are looking for some
enthusiasts who would be interested in working the table and showing off
your K3 gear to the Hamfest attendees.

I do have one person for set up at this Hamfest, but he can only do it

Hmmm,
Given that ham-affordable components are full of minor and harmless
frequency dependent characteristics, INCLUDING the antennas and dummy loads
used, is there really any good reason to EXPECT 1.8-30 power output
uniformity beyond what is commonly measured? Quite contrary to amps which
were designed, built and certified to a broadband tight uniformity (and
appropriately priced), if one WANTS exactly 500.0 watts from a KPA500 for
some purpose, and you actually trust your output measuring instrument to
deliver an accurate measurement to four figures, one just adjusts the
drive, does one not?
This is ham gear, not lab instruments, but I would be intrigued to hear
what purpose this debated level of accuracy serves, other than light
entertainment. I have sometimes heard some very interesting stuff coming
from the other side of what I thought was the left field foul line. One
never knows.
