Does anyone know if Rose is making a padded, soft case for the KX3 that will
protect it inside a backpack?

In fact, Phil, my K3/10 probably qualifies as QRP full-time though I
do get 16w out at max on 2m. I think you will notice the difference
the first time I check-in at 300w ;-) Still haven't started work on that kit.
My current interest is modifying and older DEMI 2m transverter to be
ready for use with a KX3.

I've been working with Wayne at Elecraft on a dust cover for
the KX3. Prototypes have been sent back and forth, and a
design is almost finalized.
The paddle assembly will be an option, and I'd like to know
if there are those who would -not- purchase the paddles, and
therefore would not want an opening in the cover for them.
We'll address a potential padded case next. It's a complex
issue, with many concepts of what "extras" might be added
over and above the KX3.
Stay tuned, and

Rose...
I have a couple of your K3 soft cases (happy with 'em!) and will
want a carry-case of some sort for my putative KX3. I will definitely
have the paddle "option," and would possibly want extra space for mic
and for a small power supply and other stuff. Altogether, the space in
the K3 carry-case looks about right, particularly if there were
provision for a soft partition for internal padding. My alternative is a
small pelican case with foam -- I don't plan on using the KX3 for
backpacking (will be 79 when I get one--my backpacking days are in the
past) but it would be nice to have a highly portable station for
traveling...
It seems to me that your cases are overkill for backpackers. I have
done lots of same, and just wrapping something the size of the KX3 in a
soft cloth in a nylon stuff sack was always absolutely fine -- I used to
carry a SLR camera with several lenses in my backpack in this way and
NEVER had the slightest problem. I have also carried a revolver (a 0.357
with medium barrel) in a soft pack when in wild regions -- the soft pack
was just a rectangle made of 2 layers of ripstop nylon with a thin sheet
of foam stitched between and Velcro closures at the corners. I have
forgotten what these are called, but they are standard in mountaineering
stores. One put them on the hardware like a diaper.

Hmm, this works out to an efficiency of 87%!
Not sure I believe that.

I likely will not get a KX3 ... KX1 and K2 pretty much fill my needs ...
but you never know :-) Were I to buy it, I would definitely have that
neat little paddle. If I could get it separately for my KX1 I would in
a heartbeat.

I love my K2 case Rose made for me! I'd sure consider a KX1 case too if
she had one, I'm using a generic "GPS Case" now and it fits poorly. It
would be nice if the radio could be used without totally removing it
from the case. I can do that with my K2 and case now, and I imagine it
would be an advantage for the KX3 given it's flat profile.

There is a 4 watt discrepancy between the 39 watts dialed in the K3 and the
43 watts that is shown on my PowerMaster meter. The PowerMaster coupler is
attached directly to the output of the K3 (using a double male connector)
with a 5 foot length of RG8 coax to the input of the KPA500. The
PowerMaster reading is probably more accurate than the dialed in power.
This could be factored into the efficiency equation.
Calibration of the K3 power is not linear. Roy Morris W4WFB

An alternative view from a 71 year old. I don't "backpack" in the usual
sense, I have some orthopedic injuries from long ago, but I've become
addicted to Summits On The Air and do make 1-2 mile "final ascents" to
summits that have roads or good trails with a back pack.
My "K2 Rose case" holds my K2, my LiFePO4 battery, my clipboard log with
attached mini-paddle, a mic [I've branched out some into SSB summit
activations too], my W1 wattmeter in a W8FGU case, ear buds, a tiny
audio amp, and a couple of coax jumpers and adapters, and my Garmin
GPS-III+. I put an EFHW jumpered wire antenna and W8FGU Z-match in too
if I'm not using the Buddipole.
All the "stuff" I need for the K2 is thus in the case or its external
pockets, it's padded, it protects the front panel, and I can turn the K2
90 degrees and use it inside the case in my lap. In its case, it fits
snugly into the bottom of my pack, leaving room for water, food, gloves,
and possibly an extra sweat shirt.
Works super for me. YMMV.

Like virtually all "fixed tune" or "no tune" rigs, the efficiency and so
current demand varies widely with SWR since the output filters cannot be
adjusted to compensate. (There was an advantage to "dipping the final" in
the old rigs - it kept the efficiency up.)
Also, the efficiency and so current demand will change from band to band. In
general, the efficiency is lower on the higher frequency bands.

Good evening, I was in the CQ WW CW contest this weekend and was operating at 500mW's or QRPp level. There were times I had to pump the power up to 5 watts to make the contact, then bring the level back down to 500mW's. Is there a macro or other way to toggle the rig back and forth between the two (or more but don't want to get greedy) power levels?

I have macros programmed to PF1 and PF2 for 5W and 100W respectively.
It's as easy as setting Macro 1 to 'PC005;' and Macro 2 to 'PC100;' with
the K3 utility.

Hi
I just learned about macros myself.
Try this- open the k3 utilitiy program and connect it to the k3
Open the command tester tab.
Click edit macros.
In the labels give it a label maybe 5 for 5watts.
In the command to right type in 005 or pc0051;
I have not tried it so I am not sure which works.
Click save. try the macro on the computer to see if it works on the k3
If it works you can send these macros to the k3
>From the help menu in the k3 utlity program:
Macro assignment procedure overview
a.. Start the K3 Utility.
b.. Select the Command Tester/K3 Macros tab.
c.. Click Edit Macros.
d.. Enter a short (up to 7 character) label in one of the first eight Macro Label text boxes. This label will appear in the K3's VFO B display area when you invoke the macro.
e.. Enter the sequence of K3 commands in the corresponding Macro Commands text box. You may use the Windows copy and paste functions to copy Macro Commands from source documents (such as the sample macros below) into the text boxes of the Edit Command Tester/K3 Macros dialog.
f.. Click "Send Macros 1-8 to K3" to store the macros in your K3.
g.. Leave the Edit Macros dialog by clicking Save or Cancel.
h.. On the K3 front panel, hold CONFIG and adjust VFO B until the word "MACROS" appears in the VFO B area.

Hello 6m (or aspiring 6m) DXers!
I have purchased a quantity of the Harris Platinum I Channel 2 amplifiers for the
purpose of making them available at an affordable price to serious 6m operators -
especially those in rare DXCC - who have been limited to "barefoot power". 10w input
produces around a kw output on 6m, if you use one of the cheap HPS3KW switching 50
VDC power supplies. A pair can very easily provide 1500w output continuously if you
use some high volume fans on the heat sinks. Details are on my website:
http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/HarrisAmps.htm
Please pass this information on to anyone you know who might be interested,
especially those in rare DXCC ;-) CU on 6m EME! MNI TNX and GL!

Went through my documents and can describe more completely the mods, some of
which I had forgotten. Maybe useful as a list for others. Also below is
detail on my XV144 I had mentioned.
ELecraft modules:
K2/10 10W QRP Rig
KSB2 SSB Module
K160RX 2nd RX ant + 160Meter band
K60XV Xverter+60M band
KNB2 Noise Blanker
KAF2 Audio Filter
KAT2 internal ATU
KIO2 Serial IO Module
KBT2-X (no battery included)
Mods:
600Hz CW tuning indication on S-meter bargraph board
FT-100 tuning Knob. I also have the original knob.
10meter Bandpass Filter and VFO/ALC mod
K2 BFO toroid and PLL Ref Osc Xtal Upgrade
Temperature Compensated PLL reference upgrade
Latest firmware 2.04P
2nd Xfil flattening mod (with paperwork)
KI6WX first crystal grounding and CW filter rejection mod.
Elecraft A to Rev B upgrade
Front end diodes for protection against extremely strong signals
I received questions about my XV144 transverter. My plan is to sell it with
the K2 for a bundle as long as there is interest. If the K2 sells
standalone, I will then sell the XV144, but not before. Asking $375 OBO
shipped in US. Will supply 2 RG316/U teflon BNC IF cables and serial cable
and ~13" power cord. This has the crystal oven it. I will update this
thread with the results either way. Once the K2 is sold I am ready to
order a K3 :-).

My DX club newsletter reports that the HK0NA expedition will put Malpelo on
the air some time around Jan 24, 2012. The expedition will feature K3s and
KPA500s on all bands. I don't have actual data, but it seems that of all
the DXpeditions that I've worked this year, half the radios have been
Elecrafts. There was just one (now I can't remember which) that featured
two K2-100s. Those of us who use an Elecraft radio for DXing from the
safety and comfort of the home shack find it hard to imagine toting any
other radio on a DXpedition.

I'm a retired electric utility communications technician. "My"
utility has used smart meter technology to read meters for a
number of years. My gas and electric meters are on the outside
wall of my shack and I've not been aware of any problem, either
to or from the meters.
There are a number of methods in use to read meters, but in
the case here, a meter reader drives a vehicle along the road,
"pinging" meters via UHF radio to collect data that is used to
compute the monthly billing.
See: https://www.itron.com/Pages/default.aspx for more.
Itron is a large provider of smart meter technology located
in Spokane, WA.
Trivia: The extensive information on the ARRL site ignores ...
or the writer isn't aware ... that PLC / "carrier current" is widely
used, and has been for decades. It uses frequencies in the 50
to 400 kHz range and often spans hundreds of miles for control
between switch yards, control centers, etc. The typical power
levels are in the 10 watt range, but can switch to several hundred
watts to force a signal through the line noise of a switching event.
Large RF chokes, several feet in diameter, used to keep PLC
signals off lines where they aren't used, can be seen suspended
many switch yards and sub-stations.
My utility initially used surplus WWII Navy TBL/TBK and RBK/RBK
equipment for PLC, and many years ago I bought a RBL receiver
still in the crate when the company disposed of this old equipment.
To directly answer the initial question of interference from smart
meters, I'm not aware of any ... in our case, at least.

At risk of prolonging this thread, I also live in a very quiet location.
The "smart meter" is about 20 feet from the shack (60 feet from nearest
antenna), has been there for at least 10 years, and there is not a trace
of RFI from it that I recognize as such.

Guys,
How are we defining smart meters? There appear to be a class which only
can be read remotely. Then there appears to be a class which have the
ability to control various house heavy current devices (e.g. heat
pumps). For all I know the may be only one meter with the ability to
connect "smart grid" controls.
I'd guess that these two might have different RFI generating properties
after the connections to the various devices being controlled is made.
I think of the complaints posted on various reflectors complaining about
the RFI produced by new washing machines and heat pumps.
The new meter installed here by Progress Energy (remote reading only
implemented). They are trying to get people to sign up for the ones
which control the heat pump. They are offering customers a measily
$25/year credit for connecting the heat pump control option. Apparently
the sign up rate for this has been underwhelming. I have not signed up
for our all electric house. We currently have no time of day rates for
consumers.
This quote related to PG&E smart meter backlash is consistent with my
thinking.
>The only real way for these meters to reduce the overall cost of
electricity is to make it higher priced during times when you need it -
so your showers, your computer, the stay at home moms, the elderly, the
unemployed will all pay more for using electricity during the day time.
There is no "additional cost" associated with not having a smart meter.
(unless you are assuming mandatory curtailments of the availability of
electricity through these meters). -- by the way, who do you suppose
pays for the costs of electricity while you all are enjoying smart
meters at home -- your employer/a business who cannot reduce usage very
much during the day (that's when you are working, using the employer's
electricity and reading stuff like this online) and therefore pays
higher rates. I am not opposed to smart meters but to suggest that some
who don't want them will be penalized is totally wrong. Smart meters
represent a shift of risk to the businesses and to the stay at home
folks - your "savings" are on the backs of entities who are stuck paying
the higher rates and cannot reduce consumption beyond a certain point.
Everyone wants to support the concept but few have considered the social
and economic implications - something that this publication could do --
they are great for the utilities but the benefits for the public are
still unknown.
PG&E wants the consumer to pay about $200/year to opt out of a smart meter.
Ten California counties have even outlawed them.
