[Elecraft] [K3] K3 preamp sufficient for K9AY?

Jim,
My experience is the same as Craig's. I have an ICE and also an Array
Solutions Preamp. Neither is ever used. When using the K9AY on TB, the
K3 Preamp is normally off. During a contest the attenuator might even be
turned on. Similarly I have found no need for an external preamp when
using Beverage antennas. Previously I used a five foot square magnetic
loop receiving antenna and for it, the preamp in my then Orion II was used.

I think you will like the K9AY, it is not a Beverage but it is a very
useful antenna. Good Luck.

Unless you live in a very quiet area, you won't need a preamp, Jim. My
K9AY is smaller than average and even with its lower sensitivity I have
never needed an external preamp. In fact, I normally have the K3 internal
preamp OFF on 80 and 160. Even use the attenuator or back off the RF gain
sometimes.
