Roger,
You do not say whether you were operating SSB or CW when you made use of
the NR. Which mode was it? There have been good treatments of the NR
system and its application previously on this reflector but they are not so
detailed in the manual where this information is most needed. I believe
this is a good bit of the problem which users have with the NR. I have
little experience with NR as my location is quiet though it could be on
160M; that I am missing the boat.
The K3 has so many features that even after using it for nearly three
years there is more to learn. I am not complaining about this great
versatility and I believe the K3 is still a better rig for a beginner than
many simpler radios, given that it can be afforded and then it is modular so
affordability is greatly eased.

Subject: [Elecraft] NR Use in contacting 9N7MD
Yesterday morning was my first real rigorous test for the NR and all its
capability. If not for it, I would never had understood my call if they
returned to me. Fortunately, since they were going thru the US by the
numbers, I had time to fiddle with the various NR levels. Previous to today,
the F5-1 was plenty adequate for most contacts. However, last night, before
their signal started to improve, it was a savior. The F5-1 setting was only
adequate but not the cure. As I explored the other options, I found how,
with careful settings of the volume, BW Cuts and NR, you can make a signal
intelligent when there seems to be no other way. I settled on using F7-2
(never been there before) as the best compromise and at least could tell
there was a human being speaking and I actually understood him!
Like an earlier poster, Tim, said, it sure would be nice to have the NR,
".....adjust like this: 1-2, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, etc." I
second that motion after last night. It seems like I usually use the first
or second levels.
All in all, I am pleased, especially since I am in the log now for 9N7MD on
CW and SSB! I am happy!
