Same suggestions as for "old" kit builders:

1) Take your time and follow the instructions. Never "assume" you know what to do by looking at the part.

2) Check off each step in the procedure as you go so you know you didn't miss a step.

3) Double check your work, especially just before soldering a part in. Us "old" kit builders live in amazement at how a part can jump from one place to another on the board or how the color code on a resistor can change unexpectedly when we look at it a second or third time. It's much easier if you catch them before soldering, HI!

4) Winding toroids -- be sure you have the winds on going the correct direction. Follow the photos closely. Although reversing the winding (starting from the other side of the toroid core) doesn't change the inductance, the holes in the pc board assume they are done a certain way.

And the most important of all, don't forget to have fun!

-----Original Message-----

I just received my KX1 -with 30/80 meter board and Plug-In Keyer Paddles.

I've read all the posts for the KX1 (they were extremely helpful) and reviewed the Builder pages - soldering ect .

I plan on doing the KX1 board first and do the tests at each phase and the alignment. Install the Keyer Paddles and make a few contacts on 20 and 40 meters. After I'm sure all is OK on 20 and 40, then I plan to build and install the 30 meter - 80 meter option. At this point, I am planning on winding my own toroids .....

Do you have any suggestions for a new kit builder?

Thanks -
