Well, here's one solution. I got a 1/4" plug and a little red pushbutton
momentary-contact switch (total cost at Gateway Electronics, 3 bucks). The
switch is round and has the same diameter as the plug housing. Sawed about
1/2" off the top of the plug housing , wired the switch to do PTT, epoxied
it in line with the housing, and shrank some heat-shrink tubing over the
joint. It looks like a professional piece of gear and fits one's hand
perfectly.
