Of course "zero beat" is when you hear a slow "whosh, whosh" as the combined
signal levels rise and fall and you tune to stop that. Is that what you
cannot hear? 

A good quick test is to simply tune in WWV in CW mode. Use CWT if you can't
hear zero beat with your sidetone in SPOT mode, then read the frequency on
your K3. That will show you any remaining error. (CWT isn't perfect, but
it's *very* close). Do that when WWV is transmitting only carrier if you
aren't sure - sometimes you can zero beat to a sideband only a few hundred
Hz away when the tone is being transmitted.

I just finished my kit and I seem to have some difficulty determining if the
ref. osc. is calibrated correctly.  I am using an off air signal (wwv).  I
can hear the monitor tone and then another one that gets lower in pitch as I
turn vfo a.  But i can never hear a "zero beat".  The frequency as set is
49,381,650.  Is this ok?
Can I use instead an MFJ-259B antenna analyser that can be used as a
frequency counter? or a scope?
