Mike,

This is easy to do in hindsight, but difficult in practice because of  
the reams of internal, vendor, and customer documents that would have  
to be changed.

Also, we had specific reasons for using certain model numbers, and  
they have semantic and historical significance. For example, the K2's  
amp is a "KPA100" rather than a "KPA2" because we wanted to emphasize  
the "100" (watts) as Elecraft broke out of the QRP-only genre for the  
first time. Also, we originally planned to allow use of the KPA100 as  
a generic 100-W amp sometime in the future. That never happened,  
though the FCC changes would actually allow it now. Note that the  
KX3's 100-W amp *is* generally applicable -- hence "KXPA100". Etc.

If we're lucky, our model number choices will inspire curiosity and  
discussion among linguistic paleontologists in the future.
