  Joe,

You can make your choice of several software applications - MMTTY,
fldigi, HRD/DM780, and several others - AFSK or FSK will be part of your
decision.
Download each of the applications and take a look at the user interface
and choose the one you like better.
After that, yes, you will have to "Read The Fine Manual" for that
application, and perhaps re-read the K3 Data Modes section of the manual
to see how to connect it and set the K3 for whichever FSK-D or AFSK that
you have chosen for your software application.
There are just too many combinations and personal preferences for anyone
else to tell you how you should do it.

If in the process of RTFM there is something you need clarification
about, then I am certain a pointed question here will bring you several
answers, but given the question you have asked, you will get answers
"all over the board" because there are many combinations and permutations.

I really don't want to discourage you, but that is just the way it
really is. If you want to "do it the easy way", use MMTTY as a
soundcard application (AFSK-A not FSK-D) and connect your soundcard line
in/out to the K3 line out/in, and select PTT with DTR in both MMTTY and
on the K3 CONFIG menu. Click the RTTY signal in the waterfall and
communicate. (yes, you will have to set the soundcard line output level
and the K3 line-in level for 4 to 5 bars of ALC (do that adjustment in
TX TEST) - do not use compression for data modes. Click on the RTTY
signal wanted in the waterfall and make the contact.

That should get you started, but you may want to expand beyond that easy
start. If all that does not make sense to you right now, you will have
to do some study to put it all together. There are so many variations
and personal preferences that "spoon feeding" is not possible.
