  Dave,

Behavior like that is "by definition" intermittent (sometimes it works, 
sometimes it does not), and usually can be traced to some connection.  
Do not ignore the connectors.  Usually, they will wipe off any oxidation 
by simply removing and re-seating, but at times, more drastic action is 
needed.  Try putting a tiny bit of contact cleaner on the pins and 
before it evaporates, insert it into the socket.

If properly mounted, the KDSP2 should not contact the KPA100 speaker.  
If it does, I must ask if you are using the stock standoff on the 
Control Board fastener?  You can remove the left side panel to check the 
clearance.
