Allan,
Simple things first - do you have PORT set ON in the menu?
Check and double check the computer cable. The pin numbers are marked
in the plastic but are very difficult to see. At the K2 end (male
connector pins), you should have pin 1 connected to the shield (the
shield does not connect at the computer end) and pins 2, 3 and 5 should
have wires on them - no other connections at the K2 end. Plug the two
cable ends together and you should see the wire colors match up across
the connectors. Also at the computer end, you should have a jumper
between pins 7 and 8.
If your cable is correct, the next step is to measure the DC voltages
and check the inductors with an ohmmeter to be certain they are not open.
It is more difficult to check out the RS-232 to TTL conversion chip (U1)
without a source that will constantly attempt to connect with the K2 and
an oscilloscope (N4PY software will continuously attempt to connect, HRD
gives a few tries and quits). If the DC voltages do not reveal any
problem source, I can give you some steps to check the RS-232 to TTL
converter using DC techniques (it does require that you unsolder one
wire going to the K2 control panel).
