It really depends on the type of noise. The various outboard DSP units are
quite helpful improving selectivity of older radios, clarity by reducing
some background noise, etc. I don't recall them being effective with impulse
and/or broadband noise typically associated with things like powerlines,
mercury or sodium vapor lights, etc.  On occasion you may find a rig's noise
blanker can help, but unfortunately few NBs perform well.

Some years ago out of the blue I got hit with S9+ noise across all bands
almost 24 hrs a day. Powerlines are underground. Spent days tracking it.
Then one day while raking leaves I noticed my neighbor's sodium vapor
floodlights were flickering...a symptom the lights were on their last legs,
but long legs since it took months for them to finally go kaput.  I
purchased a Timewave ANC-4 unit and installed a noise sensing antenna. With
time and patience to experiment with antenna placement and the ANC-4
settings I was able to get the noise from S9+ to S2.  But again, it took a
lot of time and patience to get there and it worked for that particular type
of noise...may not work for others.

I seem to recall a link somewhere on the ARRL website that takes you to a
page where various noise samples are recorded.  This may be a good place to
start so you can get a sense of a particular noise source that may be
causing much of your grief.
