Bob,
Yes, the best and easiest way to determine what is wrong is to do
Receiver Signal Tracing. That should allow you to isolate the problem
to a single stage and armed with that information, we can likely help
better.
You do not need a 10 MHz crystal. Any crystal frequency within the
tuning range of the K2 will do just as well. The 10 MHz crystal is
suggested if you have no other - they are inexpensive and commonly
available from a number of sources.
You will also have to build up an RF Probe (or use a 'scope). The parts
to build an RF Probe were included with your K2 kit.
