Well, it turned out to be the Mac, or the OS X version of K3 Utility, or some combination of the two that got it's brain frazzled. At Gary Surrency's suggestion, I snaked USB repeater cables to the radio room from my office, and installed the Windows version of K3 Utility and Keyspan drivers on the desktop. Firmware update went without a hitch using Windoze, and the radio appears to be none the worse for wear. No telling what really went awry.
But since I've already cabled the antenna ports from the Globe King back to the switch panel, maybe I'll get more use out of the heavy iron while I sit by the keyboard waiting for the KPA500 "order" button to appear :-) I had a chance to get a good look at both the P3 and KPA500 at Ham-Com over the weekend. Nice, very very nice. I'm rearranging the desk so there's room for both, plus at least one more P3 sized box with a 500+ watt ATU in it.

No other firmware version will load the MCU and pass verification either, and every attempt gives the same error messages on the radio. Unless there's an unpublished set of "magic buttons", I'm starting to fear the K3 may have to start a trip back to Elecraft. In the meantime, I'm ordering another Keyspan adapter. And powering up the boatanchor station for a while, since the K3 is dead and gone :-)
